The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.

The coat of arms is blue with three interwoven golden corn ears. The flag is blue with the attributes from the coat of arms set in the hoist square divided from the fly by a yellow line.
The economic rising of the Community began in 19th century when the people started to produce goods made of interwoven straw (e.g. Panama hats). This manufacture is remembered now in the symbols of the community.
In 1989/90 the community adopted its first coat of arms, and afterwards it adopted four more entirely different coats of arms in succession before adopting the current one in 1996.

The coat of arms shows the Paschal lamb according to the marketplace seal of year 1575. The unusual flag ratio adopted in 1992 is amended to more usual one at least in 1999 (probably already in 1996, but this source was not available in details).
It seems that it is in (unofficial) use the horizontal flag in ratio 1:2 with the coat of arms offset towards the hoist.

The unusual ratio of the flag of Dravograd is due the geometric construction based on the golden cut. The current coat of arms was also adopted in 1992, and was not changed.

The flag is vertically divided in three: blue-yellow-blue, with the coat of arms in the middle stripe. The coat of arms is Gules a Mullet Or surrounded with six smaller Mullets of the same. The flag is yelow with square red field in the middle containing the stars from the coat of arms.
The small marketplace received the coat of arms from the bishop Tavčar of Ljubljana in 18th century. It contained golden six-pointed star in red shield, borrowed from his episcopal coat of arms. The new coat of arms is based on that, with additional six stars to better differentiate from the nearby community of Ljubno.

The coat of arms is per fess Argent fourteen Houses Azure roofed Gules, seven and seven, and Azure an Otter [mustelidae-lutra, lutra] Argent passant regardant with claws Gules holding in jaws a Fish Or. The flag is of a pattern that is characteristic for Slovenian community flags and might be called 'Slovenian cross'. It is a cross gained by horizontal (lengthwise) division in three equal stripes and vertical crossbar that is a square set in the middle of the flag. In the square part is set the attribute from the coat of arms. The flag Gornji Petrovci is blue Slovenian cross on white field with the otter from the coat of arms in the middle. The vertical flag is, unusually, prescribed with the attribute set upwards.
The fourteen houses represent the fourteen villages in the community. In heraldry an otter is always represented with a fish - thus could be differentiated from other running four-legged animals as are dog, marten, fox etc. According to a legend, an otter may carry a much bigger fish by holding it partly on its back.
