The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.

Serbia and Montenegro - Ethnical Minorities

The Law on the Protection of the Rights and the Freedoms of the national Minorities (SL. 11/02) provides for the minorities to use their national symbols such as flags and coats of arms. The designs of these symbols are determined by the national council of the minority in question with limitation that the symbols can not be the same as the symbols of some other country. The minirities are currently mostly in the process of adoption of their symbols.
In december 2005 the state institutions of Serbia and Montenegro approved the use of the national symbols for four nacional concils: Bosniak, Bunevci, Croat and Magyar (* marked with an asterisk in the list above)
According to the 2002 census the citizens of SCG expressed their national or ethnical qualification as: Yugoslavs, Albanians, Bulgarians, Vlasi, Goranci, Macedonians, Muslims, Germans, Roma, Romanians, Russians, Ruthenians, Slovakians, Slovenians, Ukrainians and Czech (counting more then 2000 members) and others. Beside the above mentioned four communities, the national councils for folowing communities have been formed until the dissolution of SCG: Ruthenian, Romanian, Slovakian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Macedonian, Roma, Vlasi and Greek. These shall probably continue to function within Serbia and we may soon expect their symbols, as well as there may be other councils established in the mean time that may require the rights of hoisting their symbols. Other ethnic communities include Ashkali, Egyptians and Jews...
