The University of Rijeka was established in 1973, continuing the tradition of the Jesuit collegium of 1632. The University is composed of 9 faculties, an academy and a number of other organizations.

Faculty of Economics and Business

The Faculty uses an emblem consisting of stylized initials EF in shape of four slanted blue stripes with a yellow element. Prior to the introduction of this emblem, and emblem consisting of an openface minuscule Century type initials EFRI within an circular arch were used. No flag recorded.

The Faculty was established in 1961. In 1969 it is joined by the College of Economy in Hospitality Management in Opatija (Viša ekonomska škola ugostiteljskog smjera u Opatiji), and in 1972 also the Institute of Economy in Rijeka (Ekonomski institut u Rijeci). Since 1973. it becomes the University Centre for Economy and Organizational Sciences (Sveučilišni centar za ekonomske i organizacijske znanosti, SCEOZ) with six units: Faculty of Economy, Faculty for Maritime Transport, Faculty for Hotel Industry and the Study of Law as well as the Economy and Organizational Sciences Institute and the Foreign Languages Business Study. From the SCEOZ emerged in 1976 the Faculty of Law (Pravni fakultet), in 1978 the Maritime Faculty (Fakultet za pomorstvo), in 1985 the Econopmy and Tourism Study (Studij ekonomije i turizma) and in 1990 the Faculty of Economy and Tourism "Dr. Mijo Mirković" in Pula (Fakultet ekonomije i turizma "Dr. Mijo Mirković" u Puli), leaving the individual current Faculty, named in English the Faculty of Economics until 2014.

The faculty has a "coat of arms" in a circular seal shape with two double-lined concentric rings with the drawing in the centre representing "the source of knowledge". The source is widening into a blue open book reflected in the water surface, with five leaves, representing the five years of the university studies. It is inscribed around the drawing top left "Fontis sciencia" (source of knowledge) and to the right the establishment year "1960". Between the double circles it is inscribed above the Faculty name and below in two rows the University name and the location (city and state) of the Faculty.
While the above is prescribed in the statutes, the Faculty since recently uses a derivative emblem consisting only of the mirrored "source of knowledge" book with three "pages". No flag recorded.

The College of Economy in Hospitality Management in Opatija (Viša ekonomska škola ugostiteljskog smjera u Opatiji) was established in 1960 and in 1969 it becomes Department for Hospitality Management and Tourism (Odjel za ugostiteljstvo i turizam) of the Faculty of Ecenomics in Rijeka. The Department become the Faculty for Hotel Industry (Hotelijerski fakultet Opatija) in 1974. In 1999 the name was changed to Faculty of Tourist and Hotel Management (Fakultet za turistički i hotelski menadžment) and in 2008 to the current name.

The Faculty uses an emblem composed of ligatured cursive caligraphic minuscule initials FFR. No flag recorded.

The Vocational College of Education (Viša stručna pedagoška škola) in Rijeka was established in 1953 and the Teacher Training Colleges in Rijeka in 1960, Pula in 1961 and Gospić 1963. The former became the College of Industrial Education (Visoka industrijsko-pedagoška škola) in 1962, and in 1972 the Faculty of Industrial Education (Fakultet industrijske pedagogije). In 1977 the Faculty and the Teacher Training Colleges of Rijeka, Pula and Gospić merged forming the Faculty of Education (Pedagoški fakultet) as a part of the Rijeka University. In 1998 it was renamed to the current name.

Faculty of Civil Engineering

The Faculty uses an emblem consisting of the capital Roman initials GF within a square. No flag reported.

The Technical and Civil Engineering College (Viša tehnička građevinska škola ) in Rijeka was established in 1969. In 1974 it was integrated with the Technical Faculty (Tehnički fakultet), and in 1976 separated as the Faculty of Civil Engineering Sciences. Since 1982 it is a part of the Rijeka University and the unit of the Civil Engineering Institute Zagreb, and since 1991 an independant faculty under the current name within the University.

School of Medicine

Medicinski fakultet

The Faculty uses an emblem depicting its main building. It also uses a blue flag with that emblem depicted white topped with two white squares touching eachothers vertices diagonally and with the University and the faculty name inscribed underneath the emblem and the year 1955 beneath it.

The Faculty was established in 1955 as a part of the Zagreb University and since 1957 it is an independed faculty. Since 1973 and the establishemnt of the Rijeka University, it becomes one of its constituent units.

Faculty of Maritime Studies

The faculty has a "coat of arms" depicting a globe with meridians and parallels and stylized initials PF. A blue flag with the emblem encircled with te University and the Faculty name witin a white disk is recorded in use.

The Austrian-Hungarian Naval Academy in Rijeka was established in 1866, since 1889 the K. u k. Naval Academy (Marine Akademie). It was discontinued in 1918, and the Maritime College (Viša pomorska škola) was established again only in 1949. It became the Faculy of Maritime Transport (Fakultet za pomorstvo i saobraćaj) in 1978. In 1998 it was divided into the Maritime College and the Maritime Department of the University, reintegrated in 2001 into the current Faculty.

A variant with white emblem and inscriptions in a different font is recorded, probably used a few years before - possibly primarly intended for use on ships.

The Study of Law was established at the Faculty of Economics in 1973. It became the Faculty of Law in 1975 as a member of the University. In 1985 the name was changed to the Faculty of Law of the "Vladimir Bakarić" University of Rijeka, reverting to the current name in 1991.

Faculty of Engineering

The faculty has a "coat of arms" in a circular seal shape with two double-lined concentric rings with the drawing in the centre representing stylized section of ship's prow with a disk representing a machine element. Between the double circles it is inscribed above the University and below the Faculty name. No flag recorded.

The Faculty of Machine Engineering (Strojarski fakultet) was established in Rijeka in 1960, renamed in 1969 to the Faculty of Machine Engineering and Naval Architecture (Strojarsko-brodograđevni fakultet) and in 1973 to the current name.

Faculty of Teacher Education

The Faculty uses an emblem of rectangular shape, colored Bordeaux red with inscription UFRI, the frist two letter white the last two pale red. The letters are of the UNIRI Kampus font, designed by Prof. Aljoša Brajdić from Applied Art Academy for use by the University of Rijeka. The emblem is used in other colors, especially in blue shade in connection with the University-wide events. No flag reported.

The Faculty of Teacher Education was formed in 2006 by merging of the Teacher Education Colleges (Visoka učiteljska škola) of Rijeka and Gospić.

Academy of Applied Arts

The Academy uses an emblem consisting of geometric shapes "voiding" initials APU in cyan, magenta and yellow. No flag recorded.

Department of Visual Arts was established at the Pedagogy Academy in Rijeka in 1963, which became part ofthe newly established University in Rijeka in 1973. The Academy became Faculty of Pedagogy in 1977, that becomes the Faculty of Philosopy in 1998 and the department the Department for Arts Education and Visual Arts. In 2003 the Department was divided, a part remaining at the Faculty as the Art History Department and the rest becoming the current Academy.

Department of Biotechnology

The Department uses an emblem consisting of a logotype of stylized inscription BIOTECH, the first three coloured olive green and the other orange. The letter O is shaped as a ribbon in pentagram shape, and the letter I as a test tube. No flag recorded.

A Department of Mathematics and Applied Physics was established at the Vocational College of Education (Viša stručna pedagoška škola) in 1960 and since 1964 there is the Division for Physics at the Faculty of Pedagogy, and later the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The University Department was established in 2008.

The Department uses an emblem consisting of a stylized symbols for numerals zero and one, at the same time also stylized initials OI, consisting of a blue dot over a black underline and numeral 1. No flag recorded.

Already in 1962 the College of Industrial Education (Visoka industrijsko-pedagoška škola) has courses in informatics. The Chair of Informatics was established in 1987, since 1994 the Division of Informatics, within the Faculty of Education (Pedagoški fakultet) and since 1998 within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. informatiku. The University Department was established in 2008.

Department of Mathematics

The Department uses an emblem consisting of black rectangular axes with a white-to-black gradient filled circumference and a blue sine wave stylizing initials OM. No flag recorded.
