The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

The German Reichsflaggengesetz of 1935 actually came into force in Austria on 17 March 1938 (Kundmachung des Reichsstatthalters in Österreich, wodurch der erste Erlaß des Führers und Reichskanzlers über die Einführung deutscher Reichsgesetze in Österreich bekanntgemacht wird. Gesetzblatt für das Land Österreich 1938, p. 15-18). Other relevant flag regulations were only clearly transferred on 15 January 1939, for instance several regulations implementing the Reichsflaggengesetz, especially the one explicitly banning the use of former Landesflaggen, since Austria as a whole was considered a Land now, and the Austrian Länder now only as minor subdivisions similar to Prussian provinces (Kundmachung des Reichsstatthalters in Österreich, wodurch die Verordnung über die Einführung flaggenrechtlicher Vorschriften im Lande Österreich und in den sudetendeutschen Gebieten vom 14. Januar 1939 wird. Gesetzblatt für das Land Österreich 1939, p. 399-404).
Much of materials for the preparations of this page was kindly provided by Marcus Schmöger.

The civil flag continued to be used without any change with the establishment of the Federal State. The red-white-red flag was being retained in as the merchant ensign also, of course.

With the establishment of the Federal State a new coat of arms was adopted to replace the previous one. As previously, there is no proof that it was being used on flags on land; however, this design without the white disk behind the coat of arms was introduced as the naval ensign on the Danube fleet.

The coat of arms was changed on 1st May 1934, and though there is no known document changing it, presumably the state ensign was adapted, too.

The flag of the ruling party, the Fatherland's Front, was the Austrian triband with white disk containing red crutch-cross (Kruckenkreutz) and with a green chevron by the hoist. The green chevron was prescribed, though often not present in practice. In the law on flags of 1936 this flags "in Austria it could be used side-by-side with the state flag".
The organizational flags and flags denoting the presence of high party officials were white in use as well, two of the kind shown here.
