The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.	This site is harvested for the NSK digital archives.

Since 1993 the Croatian legislation allows the units of local self-government (counties, cities and communities) to have their coat of arms and flag, however these may be legally used only after they are approved by a central state authority. The a flag of a city or community should be of a one colour field with the coat of arms in the centre or offset towards hoist. Some exceptions from this rule are tolerated for the cities with traditional flag established before these rules were made. The coat of arms must follow also a set of rules to be approved. Some cities and communities use unapproved designs nevertheless. See more on the approval dates. Prior to 1993 the coats of arms and flag were not regulated by state legislation.
The official bazon (heraldic descripton) of the coats of arms and descriptions of the flags are according to the approval text of the central state authority, other description according to other city documents.
Communities of Čazma, Garešnica and Grubišno Polje were given the city status in 1997.

Bjelovar

The coat of arms is based on the elements from the historical coats of arms and seals of Bjelovar, which changed according to the actual rulers and artistic customs of the time. Already on the first seals of the city of Bjelovar around 1760 when city was established, the castle is to be found as well as the soldiers, first as the supporters, and latter as integral part of the shield design. The three sumps are more recent addition established in last hundred years. Modern blazon is therefore Argent, on a mount vert with three stumps proper a castle of the first and on the sinister a serejan soldier stantant. The flag is adopted in 1990's being white filed with the coat of arms in the centre. The width of the coat of arms is prescribed to be 2/5 of the flag hoist, although it seems that flags with larger coat of arms are used. The vertical flags in use include the city name inscribed ebeneath the arms.

Bjelovar, 1991

The original proposal for the new coat of arms in 1991 included a crown above the shield, curly compartments, supporters and chequy design. It was prepared by Miroslav Brletić. The design finally adopted by the end of the year is almost identical to the current one, with minors stylistic differences.

Bjelovar, 1978

A new design was proposed in 1978 adding to it elements typical for the socialist heraldry – golden wheat ears and green leaves, a ribbon with the name inscribed. It seem sthat it was not immidiately adopted, but it appears in use in the Bjelovarski list in the mid-1980s.

Bjelovar, 1973

A report in Bjelovarski list confirms that some kind of Bjelovar flag was in use in 1960. No further information on details of its design and status. The new community statutes prescribed the historical coat of arms in a shield shape and its contents, without extraescutcheonal elements. Depiction here colored after description.

Bjelovar, 1882

Article 2 of the 1882 city statutes prescribes the coat of arms for the city seals, without mentioning colors (beside its argent field). The tower is described as a čardak (simple wooden sentry tower in Military Border) on a mount with a soldier in front of its doors (although čardak had no doors, but retractable ladder instead). The shield is topped with a crown and supported by two guards in the border uniforms standing on a curly compartment.

Čazma

The coat of arms of modern design is in red shield on a green mount a white church with two blue roofed bell-towers between ruined yellow embattled walls and in base a blue wavy line. It is based on the seals of 1476, where the church is shown without the walls, as was used until modern age.
The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the centre. Table flags are vertical weith the arms in the centre and the orange city name above and below following the curves of the shield.

Until 1997 Čazma had the status of a community.

Daruvar

The coat of arms is gules a crane holding a rock standing above the gates with four towers embattled issuant from a two-arched bridge all argent over triple mount vert. It is based on the family arms of Counts of Janković von Daruvar, and used in this basic shape since late 18th century. The crane refers to the city name, translated from Hungarian approximately the "Crane city", and it is a symbol of vigilance. The flag is light blue with the coat of arms in the centre. A table flag in use is vertical triangularly ending with white border along the edges, the white outlined coat of arms in the centre and black Fraktur inscription of the city name in two lines below it.

The flag prescribed in 1997 included yellow ribbon along the three outer edges and yellow fringe along the fly. While the documents since prescribe no outline around the arms, flags with yellow or white outline around the arms are also recorded in use.

Daruvar, 1993 – 1997

The coat of arms adopted initially in 1993 was basically the same, but set in the "Hungarian-shaped" shield, and with the background field coloured blue. There were some other minor artistic differences (smaller crane, detailed lines showing the masonry etc.) The flag was light blue with that coat of arms in the centre, fringed golden-yellow on the outer edges and with a tricolour ribbon prescribed as a streamer above the flag on the staff. The table flag produced in the period was light blue vertical flag with the coat of arms above the blue fraktur inscription of the city name in a line.

Garešnica

The coat of arms is azure a deer's head caboshed or. The flag is blue with the yellow bordered coat of arms in the centre. Hunting is traditional in the region, as the trophies-antlers on the coat of arms show. The ceremonial flag is a blue gonfalon ending triangularly with golden fringe, the coat of arms in the centre, the city name in two lines above and a wreath of chestnut branches below.

Until 1997 Garešnica had the status of a community.

Garešnica, variant

There is also a ceremonial version of the coat of arms, with the name of the city on the ribbon and the wreath of chestnut leaves and fruits. Such is used also in a vertical light blue flag as well as in a horizontal flag with golden fringe, alhough such use is not prescribed.

Grubišno Polje

The coat of arms of Grubišno Polje is vert a jousting helmet mantled gules and or, issuant from it a vrigin clead gules with wings displayed or and crowned of the same. The helmet with the crest is from the family arms of counts of Iločki (Ujlaky de Illok), who ruled the place in 15th cnetury. Although it is based on historical elements, this is not a historical coat of arms, in spite of such claim in the Statutes. The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the centre. The table flags in use are virtual banners of arms, green vertical flags bordered yellow with the helmet offset to the top and the city name inscribed white beneath it.

Until 1997 Grubišno Polje had the status of a community.
