Ban's standard of Ban (Vice-Roy) Josip Jelačić of year 1848 is the first official Croatian tricolour. With the shape it follows the tradition of earlier ban's standards that were all in shape of cavalry guidon symbolizing the military authority of Ban. Ban's standard of Ban Josip Sokčević, 1860, follows the same pattern differing only in the family arms on reverse. On reverse is the family coat of arms of Jelačić, i.e. Sokčević. Finials are a crescent and a six-pointed star. Fringe is golden, all edges except hoist. The material used for flags has very noticeable floral texture.

The flag of the Zagreb national guard, 1848, is one of the early examples of the Croatian tricolour. Reverses on the two flags of the same basic layout in Croatian Historical Museum, have the cartouche painted 1) Madonna with child; 2) owl, book, hive as symbols of wisdom, erudition and knowledge. Embroidered inscription: 1) Obverse: Za ustav i narodnu slobodu (For constitution and national freedom), Reverse: Za bratinstvo slavjansko (For Slavic brotherhood); 2) Obverse: Za Slavjanstvo (For Slavic-ness), Reverse: Za Slobodu (For freedom). Fringe is golden, all edges except hoist (not completely preserved). Streamer is tricolour, with embroidered ornaments and inscriptions.
