The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

While the official flag was the simple Serb tricolour only, in practice many variations of the flag defaced with various central emblems. Various sources claim that some of those flags are for specific use only or that they are of limited purpose, but in most cases there was no differentiation among them nor the emblem-less flag and they could have been interchanged at whim of the user.

Red over blue over white tricolour is the traditional Serb tricolour. At the time of its adoption by RSK, Serbia (within Yugoslavia) still used the flag with five-pointed star that was dropped afterwards, so that the flag of RSK was totally equal to the flag of the Republic of Serbia, but also to the flag of the Republic Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The most frequently used variant is with yellow cross based on the design of the Serbian coat of arms, the cross being surrounded with four Cyrillic letters S. The letters are in fact simplification and modern interpretation of the charges in the coat of arms that are the fire-irons (called in Serb ocila, and the whole emblem being sometimes called so). This variation is in fact the flag of the Serb Orthodox Church, although the official church flag is in ratio 1:3.

Sometimes the cross was seen off-set towards hoist, also sometimes it was smaller then the width of the blue stripe. Some sources claim that this was used only in Eastern Slavonia, but that is not confirmed.

A variant with the coat of arms is reported, sometimes claimed to be the state flag, but there is no ground for that claim.

A variant with white shield with two golden crossed sabres and the coat of arms in chief is reported allegedly as the flag of the President of RSK. Possibly it was some army unit (unofficial?) flag.

A variant with coat of arms set on a shield was not infrequent either. The variant on a blue shield was especially common in Eastern Slavonia after 1995.
