The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

On 9th July 2003 the Parliament of the Republic of Slovenia issued a competition for the design of "design elements" that may be used for the new state symbols of Slovenia. The competition with very strict technical conditions was opened for the citizens of Slovenia until 30 September. We are proud to highlight that the competition included the FAME in the list of references for the competitors to consult for heraldic and vexillological expertise. The competition searched for the design of a flag, a coat of arms and an emblem. Almost 200 proposals were received and on 28 October the jury published the decisions. Three financial prises were given for each the coat of arms, the flag and the emblem, and additional four honorary prises were given.

The first prize was given to the design by Dušan Jovanovič, who explains it as "blue, white and red stripes in the middle form the traditional pattern of Triglav, mirrored in a river underneath as a metaphor of the Slovenian waters".

The second prize is a design by Klemen Rodman, describing it as "a ring in the middle of a blue flag symbolises the general values like eternity, unending and unity. The coat of arms is also containing the ring, but there it is combined with the Triglav emblem.
