The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

The coat of arms pictures the city roofs that in the same time represent the hills surrounding Sarajevo, the civic walls with doors and the bridged river of Miljacka. The coat of arms is, presumably, adopted in 1970 (then shown on Yugoslav post stamps issued on 25 years of liberation of the city). The flag was adopted probably at the same time. The coat of arms of that time included also a red five-pointed star between the roofs-hills. After the independence, the star is replaced with three and then only one golden fleur-de-lis. In general trend of removing of the national(istic) symbols, induced by international supervision for Bosnia and Herzegovina in second half of 1990's, the fleur-de-lis was dropped as well. The design adopted as temporary in 1998 was adopted as definitive design in 2000.
The City of Sarajevo is a supra-communal body - the capital of the Sarajevo Canton, of the Federation of B&H and of Bosnia and Herzegovina, composed of four communities: Centar, Novi Grad, Novo Sarajevo and Stari Grad.

The ceremonial flag proposed in 1999 was similar to the finally adopted one, bearing the lighter shades of blue and yellow (probably as the originally proposed normal flag) and having a ceremonial varison of the coat of arms in the middle. Nither the ceremonial coat of arms nor the ceremonial flag were adopted in the end.
