The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

The flag of the Federation is a compromise design composed of Bosniak and Croat symbols. The green and the red stripe represent the two peoples, as well as the two small shields in the coat of arms. The blue field of the arms contains ten six-pointed stars for the Federation composed of ten cantons. The white field of the flag is of triple width of each of the red and green, making it square.
Since 14 June 2007 the coat of arms and the flag are abolished and not in official use. Since then the Federation uses no official symbols, while the concourse for new symbols is being held.
Since the Federation was formed with the Dayton Agreement in 1995 the flag has been considered for it. The Constitutional Assembly issued a public competition and 65 proposals were received. Four designs were awarded and with some correction proposed to the Assembly for adoption. The flag issue was discussed vigorously in the Assembly and more widely and in the time several proposals were published in media that were under consideration in Parliament. It was soon clear that any "neutral" proposal had no chance and that a compromise of national symbols of Croats and Bosniaks was to be adopted.

The commission judging the public competition awarded two equal second awards. One is a coat of arms in a triangular shield shape per bend dentilly azure a fleur de lys or and chequy argent and gules 5×6, the shield edged argent. The shield is set in the centre of a red-white-green horizontal tricolour. The jury required the fleur de lys to be changed to argent, the balancing of the elements and colour shades.

The other of the two awards has the triangular Samnitic shield per pale azure in the chief a fleur de lis or and gules in the chief quartered argent and gules. The flag is a vertically divided into blue and red with the fleur de lis in the canton and the chequy square in the fly canton. The commission requested the author to replace the blue with green and the yellow fleur de lis with a white one.

Beside the two second awards, the jurry bought off the rights for two other received proposals. One has a flag quartered per off-set cross, forming square fields next to the hoist, white, blue, red and white.

The other is a purple (heraldic purpure) triangular heart shaped shield with a saltire of five fretted wavy strings, top to bottom red, yellow, green, cyan and blue. The fret is made so that the first, middle and last stripe of the dexter bend go over all others, while the second and fourth pass being all others. The design emphasize improtance of rivers for the country, both forming most of its boundaries as well as the main communication routes within the country, and symbolizes interconection of cultures. The unusual heraldic colour for the background makes the flag distinctive.

The awarded proposals were corrected by the authors as required and published in the Assembly as well as in the number of media.

The Belinić's proposal was also corrected as the jurry requested, while the flag was made into the vertical form. Although eventually the Assembly rejected this as well as other proposals, this vertical flag was hoisted during the Assembly meetings almost since the very begining of the discussion on the new flag until its final adoption, and therefore it may be considered a kind of de facto flag of the Federation at least since April until November 1996.
After the competition results were published and corrections made per requests, other variations of the same basic designs were discussed and shown in media.

A proposal of vertical shape was considered as a solution that would resolve the question whose colours should be above. This variation had the symbols dynamically unbalanced in chief and base.

Widening of the white stripe seemed the result of rejection of "simple" tricolours that were already "taken" by other nations. Quartering of the central square was due to symbolize equivalence of the two nations.

This flag is shown on the cover of document "Novi prijedlog grba i zastave Federacije Bosne i Hercegovine" (New proposal for the coat of arms and the flag of the Federation) shown on HRT Dnevnik 21st October 1998 (dating probably from mid-1996). The general layout of the flag reached the latter adopted design, only the shield is different.
