Danilo I Petrović Njegoš proclaimed himself the prince and ruler of Montenegro in 1851. His standard preserved in Cetinje is purple with crowned white double-headed eagle holding a sceptre and orb above a golden lion passant. On eagle's breasts are initials in Cyrillic D. I.

Nikola I succeeded the throne in 1860. His princely standard is red with white border, and the same emblems as in his uncle Danilo's flag, except for the initials.

The war flag used around 1861 is red square with yellow border containing in the middle a white cross couped pattee with red initials NI.
