Early Montenegrin merchant fleet used white flag with red cross throughout.

The cross from the war flag was set in the canton of a red-white-red triband in 1880, but was soon replaced with the tricolour.

The cross from the war flag was set in the canton of the tricolour in 1880, but neither this flag survived for long.

According Mc. Candles this was the war ensign while the civil one was the plain tricolour (though, it is very doubt that the state had a war fleet).

The war flag introduced in 1882 is only slightly different then the previous one.

The royal standard from around 1900 retained earlier charges, but changes the field to tricolour.
