The regulations on the local flags in Croatia require that a flag of a city or community be of a field of one colour with the coat of arms in the middle or offset towards hoist. Some exceptions from this rule are tolerated for the cities with traditional flag established before these rules were made, while some cities choose to ignore the regulations and use a flag of their liking. It may be that in time the latter exceptions would be replaced.
In 1997 the communities of Mursko Središće and Prelog were given the status of a city.

Čakovec

The coat of arms is Azure issuant from base a Massoned Wall embattled and with a Tower Argent between two Mullets Or. The coat of arms is canting, as the most probable origin of the name Chaktornya is Csaky's Tower, after the count Dimitry Csaky, high magistrate and palatine on the court of king Bela IV (14th century). The coat of arms s based on a 1596 seal and is actually the family arms of Ernusth de Csáktornya from 15th century. In 16th century it was inherited by the Zrinski family, who marshalled the coat of arms in their own. The flag is blue with the coat of arms outlined in white set in the middle.

The coat of arms adopted in 1993 was only in minor details different from the current and the historical pattern. It was used both in horizontal and vertical flag.

In April 1941 Hungary occupied, and in December annexed Čakovec. In 1941 Hungary adopted flags for all its cities - the only one in current Croatia being Csáktornya. All these flags were in relatively simple geometrical patterns based on the colours of the traditional coats of arms. The flag of Csáktornya, then in the Zala County, was vertically divided blue and white. Even in Hungary these flags were soon almost forgotten and only exceptionally they serve as the basis of the modern used flags.
The flag was de facto abandoned in April 1945 when the Yugoslav Army liberated Međimurje that was formally reallocated it to Croatia by the Treaty of Paris in 1947.

Mursko Središće

The coat of arms of Mursko Središće is Vert a Bar raised Argent and a Coal Machine Or. The mining equipment shown in the coat of arms is a reminder of extensive coal mining industry that made the city prosperous and is for a long time closed now, and to the oil exploitation that is done in the area since the end of 19th century.
The flag is green with the golden bordered coat of arms moved upwards next to the hoist. A yellow flag was also reported in use, but the status is unknown, possibly it was an early variant, replaced with the green flag evetually.

Mursko Središće was a community until 1997 when it was give status of a city.

Prelog

The coat of arms of Prelog is azure a tower issuant argent between two mullets or. The flag is dark blue with the golden bordered coat of arms off-set towards top hoist.
