[The FAME - Flag and Arms of the Modern Era]

The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.

University of Zagreb - Constituent Units

The University of Zagreb was formed in 1669 when the Emperor Leopold I granted the university status to the Jesuit academy in Zagreb (Neoacademia Zagrabiensis), thus being the oldest in Croatia with uniterupted activity. After the Jesuit disbandment, the Empress Maria Theresia established on its roots the Royal Academy of Science (Regia scientiarum academia), becoming in 1874 the University of Zagreb. It is composed today of 29 individual faculties, 3 academies and a number of other organizations.
All the University units, beside their own symbols if they have them, also use the University emblem and flag.

The Faculty has a "coat of arms" consisting of a circular emblem depicting the Deanery (main building) of the Faculty, encircled with the inscription in Croatian or in Latin: above the University name, below the Faculty name and the year 1917. In practice the year is omitted from the Croatian variant (while the Latin variant is not confirmed in use, depcited here as a reconstruction.) The flag is white with the emblem in the centre (of unspeficied colour, but probably would be blue). The use of flags with the new emblem was not yet confirmed.

Although the modernized University in 1874 was supposed to have a Physicians Faculty (Lječnički fakultet), it was not established until 1917. when the Faculty (or School) of Medicine was opened.
