The University of Zagreb was formed in 1669 when the Emperor Leopold I granted the university status to the Jesuit academy in Zagreb (Neoacademia Zagrabiensis), thus being the oldest in Croatia with uniterupted activity. After the Jesuit disbandment, the Empress Maria Theresia established on its roots the Royal Academy of Science (Regia scientiarum academia), becoming in 1874 the University of Zagreb. It is composed today of 29 individual faculties, 3 academies and a number of other organizations.

It is said that the traditional colours of HAŠK and AŠD were red-white-golden horizontal tricolour. From these colours the current emblem was devised as well. The individual clubs members of HAŠK Mladost use the tricolour as their own flag, while they have individual emblems to be displayed together with the HAŠK emblem.
