The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

The Croatian universities use their symbols, that are mostly seal-shaped, often circular, and although the universities themselves call them “coats of arms”, they have no heraldic character, so they could not be considered heraldic coats of arms. Most of the symbols contain inscriptions in Croatian and/or Latin. Generally, no colour is prescribed for them, except for their use on flags. The university flags are mostly mono-coloured, often matching the city flag colour. As a rule the symbols are prescribed in the statutes of each university.

The University of Zagreb has circular "arms" depicting the university building. Along the edge is the name and founding year (1669) in Croatian and Arabic numerals or in Latin and Roman numerals. The flag is blue, 1:2, with the arms in gold in the centre, half the flag width in diameter. The flags used are, apparently just as frequent with the Croatian as with the Latin inscriptions.
The University of Zagreb was formed in 1669 when the Emperor Leopold I granted the university status to the Jesuit academy in Zagreb (Neoacademia Zagrabiensis), thus being the oldest in Croatia with uniterupted activity. After the Jesuit disbandment, the Empress Maria Theresia established on its roots the Royal Academy of Science (Regia scientiarum academia), becoming in 1874 the Univrsity of Zagreb. It is composed today of 29 individual faculties, 3 academies and a number of other organizations.

The University of Rijeka has circular "arms" with a stylized depiction synthesizing several symbols: a double letter R, an owl, a Glagolitic letter S, but also recalling a mooring bollard (bit) and an anvil; and a stylized sea below. Surrounding it is the name in Croatian or Latin. It is among the few university "arms" with prescribed colours. The central symbol is golden-yellow on dark blue background; the outline and the text are also dark blue with light blue background. The flag is light blue, 1:2, with the arms half the flag width in diameter. It appears that in the practice, almost exclusivly the flags with the Croatian inscriptions are used.

The Croatian Catholic University is the only one that prescribes a heraldic coat of arms: in a semi-circular shield gules a Višeslav's cross issuant between letters alpha and omega and in the chief sinister a stylized eight-pointed star. Apparently, it is not much used as a logo seems to be preferred - a blue square with the stylized eight-pointed star. The flag is vertical with the logo in the upper and the name in Croatian and Latin in silver and blue stripes in the lower half. Although the Statutes prescribe inclusion of the inscription "Lux vera" (True light) in the upper right part of the flag, it seems that it is in practice regularly omitted.
The Croatian Catholic University Zagreb was established in 2006. It is composed of three departments.
