The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

The coat of arms of Ilirska Bistrica is Azure a Ship Or. The ship is a liburna of Illyrians, ancient people who settled the area and who were still famous for their ships still around the time of Marc Anthony. The coat of arms is the same as the coat of arms of Illyrian provinces formed in Napoleonic times and shortly afterwards retained in the Habsburg system as Kingdom of Illyrian. The coat of arms was first adopted as the coat of arms of Ilirska Bistrica in 1872 after a lengthily dispute over it with imperial office in Vienna. Since it was used until today in various artistic renditions. In early 1930's the Italian governor added the word Grepenna on a ribbon below the shield, something that still remains somewhat a mystery. The coat of arms and the flag of the community were adopted again in 1975, and this design was used intil recently, when the new graphical redention was made.
The flag is light blue vertical flag with the coat of arms edged white set in it top part. Even though the 1:3 flag is prescribed, apparenrly only the 1:2 flags are in actual use. There is also a table flag, which adds the name of the community above the coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Ilirska Bistrica adopted in 1975 were basically the same, expect somewhat more details in the drawing of the ship, while the shield was encircled with a white convex shield containing in its base black inscription of the name of the community. The vertical flag was introduced in 1990's with golden fringe along the lower edge. Horizontal flag was, as some claim, actually never made, even if it was prescribed.

The coat of arms of Izola (in Italian Isola, the community being bilingual) is a flying white dove holding an olive branch in light blue filed and with golden mount in base. The yellow mount symbolizes the island on which the city is founded and the dove is symbol of peace. The legend on the adoption of the coat of arms recounts the story of Genovese invasion to Koper, the smal city of Izola being their next target. However, it is said that when they turned their ships towards the island the dove flew out of the belfry and shied so brightly that they had to turn their ships back. The flag is blue with the coat of arms in the middle. The modern design was adopted in 1995, while in 2000 the shades of the colours used and the details of the ratio of coat of arms toward the flag size was determined in more details. Vertical variant of the flag is then also clearly determined separately.

The 1995 Statutes introduced a modernized design of the traditional coat of arms and the 1987 adopted flag. The colour shades were determined latter on, while it seems that very light blue shade was continued in use like in the previous flag, at first.

The coat of arms adopted in 1987 is basically the same as the modern coat of arms, but with different artistic rendition - having a bronze cartouche around the oval shield. The flag differed from the current design only in the coat of arms, also.

The coat of arms of the community of Jesenice is equal to the coat of arms of the town of the same name being the centre of the community, similar case being with many other Slovenian communities. The coat of arms is a cobalt-blue shield bearing a silver medieval symbol for iron. The ironworks are traditional in Jesenice from at least medieval period. The flag is silver with the coat of arms in the upper part. While the decision describes a rectangular flag in ratio 1:2, both Stanič and Gogala picture a trinagularly ending longer flag with a larger coat of arms.
