The coat of arms is red bordered white shield with two blue hooks interlaced and connected in base. The flag is vertical, divided lengthwise in blue and white with the coat of arms in it slightly off-set to the top and with tails at fly. The arms are based on the 12th century seals of Mengeš lords, interpreted by some as interwoven snakes, by others as fishing hooks. The community took over the symbols of previous Local Community of Mengeš within the Community of Domžale.

Odlok o grbu, zastavi, občinskem prazniku in priznanjih v Občini Mežica, 18.05.1998, Uradni list RS, št. 47/98
Stanič, Jakopič: "Osnove heraldike in istovetnostni simboli slovenskih občin", Lečnik, Ljubljana, 2005, pp. 183-184.
The coat of arms of Mežica is light blue shield bordered with grey containing a green disk surrounded with five dark green balls and one crowned and "bearded" golden dot. The central green disk represents the mountain Peca and the five other disks are for five surrounding hills. The golden figure at the top is stylized representation of the King Matias (Kralj Matjaž), legendary king who sleeps in the mountain together with all his army, waiting for the moment to rise and deliver the Slovenian people to freedom. The legend stems from the time of Turkish raids even so far to north. The two crossed black hammers represent mining trade. There was in Mežica lead and zinc mine since at least 15th century. Since the end of 20th century the mining has stopped and the mine is now a museum, a popular tourist target.
The flag is green vertical flag with a black stripe along the (viewer's) left edge fimbriate golden. In the middle of the green field is set the coat of arms.

In the shield there are symbols of the patron St. Nicolas (after whom the place is named) - a crosier, a book and three golden balls symbolizing respectfully guidance, wisdom and care for those in need. The crosier and balls are coloured earthy yellow. The four regions of the green field made by the waves symbolize the four local communities (the community subdivisions) that make up the community. The flag is of the same light greenish field as in the waves in the coat of arms with the arms which are set in the middle.

Design: Valt Jurečič, Heraldika d.o.o
The coat of arms is per pale argent a key sable fesswise conjoined with a vine leaf to the chief and a bunch of grapes azure to the base and gules a dexter foot imprint proper. The flag is lengthwise bicolour of white and red with the full coat of arms set in the centre of it so that its gules part is in the white stripe and its argent part is in the red stripe. (Although the vertical flag is displayed in the documents, the horizontal one seems to be described with white over red, and apparently the coat of arms set sideways.) These symbols were adopted in the community assembly in the first reading but should be confirmed once again. The foot is an ancient coat of arms of Mokronog (usually shown as azure the foot proper), canting for the town name meaning more or less "wet feet". The key and vine elements are thus probably standing for Trebelno.
The community of Makronog-Trebelno seceded from Trebnje in 2006.
