The FAME is site devoted to systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author support or approve the ideas they may stand for. |
The black over yellow bicolour are the colours of the Monarchy. Occasionally they would be used in the flag form on land, too, however these we (just like Landesfarben) not specifically prescribed as a flag.
The middle coat of arms blazoning: A selfstanding double-headed eagle sable, armed and crowned or, holding a sceptre and sword in dexter claw and an orb in sinister claw, all proper, beneath the Austrian Imperial crown proper stringed azure; on its breast an escutcheon surrounded by the Collar of the Order of Golden Fleece, bearing tierced per pale: Or, a lion gules crowned azure (Habsburg), Gules a fess argent (Austria), Or on a bend gules three allerions argent (Lorraine). On the wings and on the tail are arranged coat of arms of the lands, counterclockwise: Hungary, Galizia, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Carithia impaled Krain, Moravia impaled Silesia, Transilvania, Illyria and Bohemia. The exact details of the coat of arms and the disposition of various crownlands changed over the history. The one shown is according to Ströhl's Armorial, 1895.
