[The FAME - Flag and Arms of the Modern Era]

The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.

The coat of arms of Renče-Vogrsko is per fess, chief per pall argent and gules overall a crescent counterchanged and base three chevronels gules embatteled moline. This was actually used by community even before the formal adoption. The coat of arms combine ancient arms of two noble families, Ungrispach from Vogrsko and Hofer from Renče. The first originates from 11th century and is said to depcits a eel (although this looks like a crescent), which is also canting the name of Vogrsko. In 1920's the community Vogrsko used the coat of arms of Ungrispach, quartered the one used here with a lion rampant, in it community seal. The Hofer's arms depict heraldically roofs with archers' embattelemts, used since 13th centruy until 1587 when the family died out. There are still similar embattlelemts to be seen in Renče.
The flag is used since the formal adoption. It is vertical flag in two ratio variants, divided into upper red part covering the 2/3 of the height and containing dark red outlined white "roofs" (chevronels) from the coat of arms in its upper half and in the white lower 1/3 the dark red outlined "eel" (crescent) vertically divided red and white.

The Community of Renče-Vogrsko was separated from the community of Nova Gorica in 2006.

The coat of arms of Ribnica is Gules on a Bend sinister Argent a Fish Azure. It is canting for the community name - riba meaning fish. It is said that the fish represented is a grayling (lipan in Slovenian, Thymallus thymallus). The idea for the flag was promoted by the organizers of the Ribnica fastival since late 1960's and the flags were produced in 1973, formally adopted as the flag of the Community of Ribnica in 1978. The flag - blue over green bicolour with the coat of arms in the centre - and the coat of arms within it was designed by Janko Hren, an architect from Ribnica. His father, also an architect, Alojzij Hren produced a carved coat of arms above the municipal building in 1926, based on the arms shown by Valvasor in the Glory of the Duchy of Crain in 1687. It is unknown what was Valvasor's source.
The arms and the flag were confirmed in the Statutes of 1991, 1995 and 2000. However, while the coat of arms shape in the flag was retained since 1990's without any variation, in use of coats of arms outside the flag varied much - in regard to the shield shape and the drawing of the fish, otherwise all following the blazon closely. The community used the redrawing of the 1687 Valvasor's design within carouche, the J. Hren's design with and without the white outline and even with a blue outline around the white one, the design for the car licence plates, the design within a semicircular shield (since 1998), the design with pointed shield (since 2011).
The coat of arms reminisce the legend of the naming of the town. Once upon a time the area that is now the valley of Ribnica was a large lake, rich with all kinds of fishes. Among others, there was one beautiful goldfish there. In the nearby mountain Velika gora lived also a mighty giant, who was sleeping by day, and who went fishing in the lake by night. The goldfish shining in the night helped him fishing. In Suha krajina ("Drylands") there were no water, and people living there went to the lake to get water. Once taking the water, they caught also the goldfish, and they threw it away among some rocks, where the fish turned to stone. When the giant woke up and when he could not find the fish, he went searching for it. Unable to find it, he went in rage throwing into the lake anything he got his hands by - trees and stones. These stones made numerous openings at the bottom of the lake, though which all the water leaked out. Numerous fishes were left dry and people came to take them with wagons from all the countries. And, therefore named to place after the fishes.

The new 2012 Statutes dropped the description of the coat of arms and the flag and the community issued a proposal of the redesign of the coat of arms and proposed new flag for the public debate in September 2011. The new coat of arms standardizes the shield shape, flips the bend stripe and adds details to the fish depiction. The new flag follows the modern Slovenian municipal vexillology principles, choosing colours from the arms with an attribute in it. Several designs of the flag based on the same basic idea were published.

The coat of arms of Rogaška Slatina is Vert a Pegasus Argent rampant. The flag consists of a green square field at hoist with the white Pegasus from the coat of arms and fly part consisting of seven green and white stripes. The Pegasus is connected with Rogaška Slatina as the ancient Greek legend was transferred to the 17th century. Namely, Apollo called upon Pegasus to hit with its hoof on the ground to strike open a well Gippocrene. This legend was shown in a 17th century coper plate engraving promoting the healing powers of the mineral water in Roitschocrene - the Rogaška well. The flag was first prescribed in ratio 1:3, but that was soon changed to 2:5.

The previous symbols were probably adopted in 1980's and confirmed in 1995. The coat of arms was Vert, semee of Disks Or, decreasing in size from base to chief. Above shield is a golden cipher. The coat of arms pictures the bubbles of mineral water, the fame of Rogaška Slatina.
The Decision did not describe the layout of the flag, only the position of the coat of arms in three official flags ratios. The flag field was not described! According to the Decision the initials above the shield should have been golden, but in practice, it seems that they were used mainly in green.

The fir tree stands for the woodwork tradition and the water stand for the oldest hydroelectric power plant on the Drava river.

The coat of arms is officially explained so: The coat of arms is made of typical elements representing the identification of the community on wider, state level. A stylized grape represent vine growing as the most important branch in community, and therefore the grape is in the centre of the coat of arms. An important part of the coat of arms is also a stylized linden leaf, in its upper part turned towards the grape playing the role of the vine tendril. The shape of the linden leaf tells that the Community of Semič is famous for numerous old linden trees, among which the most famous is the Kočka lipa' 600 years old. With this two natural elements is represented the connection between the linden leaf and the grape, between the tradition and the modern times. The flag is green, with the coat of arms when hoisted vertically in the middle of the upper half.
