Republic of Ragusa/Dubrovnik, 1272 - 1808

Dubrovačka Republika

Republic of Dubrovnik, formed in XIII century, was independent state throughout the history and respectable trading power until it was made to an end by Napoleonic army which entered the city on 27-DEC-1807 with consent of city government. The Republic formally existed for a month more, until 31-JAN-1808. The flags of the Republic were banned on 27-DEC, but city government ignored the order, so the flags were virtually used until end of January next year.

Primary Ensign

[Primary Ensign] [Alternation] [Proposal] [State Flag and Ensign and War Ensign]
Adopted: 1272 in many variants of the image, colouring and position of St. Blasius (Sv. Vlaho), with or without the 'S.B.', usually on white background
Abandoned: 31st January 1808

There are several older sources (and many newer repeating error) showing several designs of flag of Dubrovnik - quartered white and blue; quartered white and red; white with three blue diagonal stripes; and similar. Such flags were never used, nor there is any document in Dubrovnik archives that would indicate such flags. The most notable error is one with diagonal stripes originating from an erroneous representation of the arms of Dubrovnik in Slovnik naucný, Praha, 1874, and repeated since in several lexicons and encyclopaedias.

Secondary Ensign

[Secondary Ensign] (1) [Alternation] [Proposal] [Civil and State Flag and Ensign]
[Secondary Ensign] (2) [Alternation] [Proposal] [Civil and State Flag and Ensign]

Abandoned: 27-DEC-1807, continued to be used as the flag of the city.

Secondary ensign. The version with outlined shield is most frequently found in sources.

Special Ensign

[Special Ensign] [Alternation] [Proposal] [State Ensign]
Adopted: Since 15th century in variants
Abandoned: 27th December 1807

Special ensign, typically as the flag indicating that the high officials of the Republic are on board of the vessel.
