The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for.	This site is harvested for the NSK digital archives.

Since 1993 the Croatian legislation allows the units of local self-government (counties, cities and communities) to have their coat of arms and flag, however these may be legally used only after they are approved by a central state authority. The a flag of a city or community should be of a one colour field with the coat of arms in the centre or offset towards hoist. Some exceptions from this rule are tolerated for the cities with traditional flag established before these rules were made. The coat of arms must follow also a set of rules to be approved. Some cities and communities use unapproved designs nevertheless. See more on the approval dates. Prior to 1993 the coats of arms and flag were not regulated by state legislation.
The official bazon (heraldic descripton) of the coats of arms and descriptions of the flags are according to the approval text of the central state authority, other description according to other city documents.
In the 1997 reform the community of Đurđevac was given a city status.

Koprivnica

The coat of arms of the City of Koprivnica is the historical coat of arms of the free royal city of Koprivnica. The decision of the civic assembly described the coat of arms: "In semicircular shield of blue field a white tower without gates embattled and with carved columns. Above the tower there is a yellow royal (Anjou) crown, and to the left and right each a double yellow fleur-de-lis also symbolising the Anjou house that granted the free royal city status to Koprivnica." The flag is light blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle. The ceremonial flag is vertical version of the light blue flag ending in swallowtail. The same swallowtailed design is used for the ceremonial table flags as well.
The historical flag of the city of 1718 is swallowtailed, double-sided, and fabricated from a single piece of damask silk, coloured dark red and measuring 107×132 cm. The rapport (repetitive floral pattern) of the textile is an elongated rectangle measuring 24×57 cm. In the centre of the obverse is a painted depiction of the Austrian coat of arms with the ruler's insignia, with a breast medallion depicting, in icon form, the Mother of God with the Christ Child. Above the iconographic-heraldic depiction is inscribed: AVXILIUM CHRISTIANORUM (Help of Christians), and below, the year: 17-18. On the reverse is the coat of arms of the city of Koprivnica within a wreath, with the inscription above CIVIT: CAPRON: (Civitas Capronitza, i.e. the City of Koprivnica). The year 17-18 is inscribed here below the wreath as well. Wool canvas is sewn along the top edge of the flag for the sleeve. The flag is edged with dark red silk fringe, 2 cm wide. The flag is in the Croatian History Museum collection, and it was restored in the Croatian Restoration Institute in 2013.

Koprivnica, 1996 – 2010

The current design was actually adopted in 1996, with minor differences: the hatching in the lower part of the crown is mirrored, the flag had no yellow border around the arms prescribed, and the ceremonial flag was with the yellow border along all the edges of the flag. It appears that the design formalized in 2010 (ie. in already in the 2009 Statutes) was actually in de facto use since 1996 nevertheless.

Koprivnica, 1991 – 1996

The coat of arms adopted in 1991 is modernization of the old seal: azure a tower gules issuing from an embatteled wall argent between two double fleurs-de-lis argent and in the chief a crown gold toped with a cross and in the base an ornament also or. The flag was light blue with the coat of arms in its centre.
The coat of arms of Koprivnica originates from a seal of 1545, which also includes two severed Turkish heads atop the tower. It has been used in artistic variations until 1948. A new design was made in 1966 replacing the lilies with corn ears and the crown with a star. The city used a red flag with the arms painted in it from 1718.

Koprivnica, ca. 1971

In 1971 the community issued bonds for a loan to build a school, that included a variation of the 1966 prescribed emblem, however, showing no date inscribed and having the more traditional heraldic shield shape. This was probably not an isolated case of such use. The emblem was shown monocoloured in shades.

Koprivnica, 1966 – 1991

No flag.

In 1966 the community adopted an emblem, based on the historical coat of arms, but replacing the royal crown with a five-pointed star, and adding a date in the base. Horvatić states that the date was 7 November 1943, the first liberation of the city in the World War II, but shows the design with the date 29 November 1943. If the emblem was prescribed in colours, it is not known so far.

Koprivnica, ca. 1961

After the World War II Koprivnica used the previous city tax stamps overprinted with the new values, but showing the historical coat of arms without any changes. Eventually this came out of use, and the first subsequent occasion is the 1961 memorial booklet on the city museum anniversary, showing the simplified coat of arms, with only a massoned tower within a shield toped with a graphical embatteled civic crown. It is unkown if it was used in colour and if it was officially sanctioned.

Koprivnica, 1718

A city flag of 1718 is preserved in the Croatian History Museum collection (Inventory nr. 34670). It is swallow-tailed, double-sided, and fabricated from a single piece of damask silk, coloured dark red and measuring 107×132 cm. Đurđevac

The coat of arms of Đurđevac is vert a rooster displayed or crested, galloped and armed gules sitting an a hurt and in the chief two mullets also or. The flag is yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.
In the new administrative division of Croatia Đurđevac gained the status of a city only in 1997, when, on the solemn session of the Council in February 1997 the new coat of arms adopted in March previous year, were presented, after the approval from the Ministry was gained. A golden peacock on a cannonball reminds to the legend, according to which the city was saved from Turkish siege by firing peacocks instead of cannonballs. The stars are taken from the Ernust family arms (from which the moder arms of Čakovec developed). Sigismund Ernust, ban (vice-roy) of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia since 1494 rebuild the fortress of Đurđevac to its present shape.
The official gazette 4/06 inludes a drawing of the flag where the flag field is shown white with coloured coat of arms, however, it must simply be a printng error, since everywhere else the flag is clearly described as yellow. The 2006 decisions do not change the essence of the coat of arms and the flag.

Until 1997 Đurđevac had status of a community.

Đurđevac, 1991 – 1996

The previous coat of arms of Đurđevac displayed in a white shield a white castle (the old city of Đurđevac bult by Sigismund Erust, bishop of Pecs) roofed red over a green base crossed by white fimbriated blue wavy line, all flanked with two corn ears and the name of the city above golden in an arch. Variations of this design depicting between the inscription and the castle the chequy shield and date 3.5.1945. in the green field above the wavy line (Podravec) or the state coat of arms (105th Brigade flag) were also used. The design was probably adopted prior to 1990 with the red five-pointed star instead.

Križevci

The coat of arms of Križevci was granted in 1752, when Empress Maria Theresia united the upper and lower towns - Gornji and Donji Križevac. It is canting, since the name refers to crosses (city is named in Latin Crux, German Kreutz and Magyar Korös). It can be blazoned as Azure, two hands proper clasping each other embowed, dexter armoured Argent and sinister clad Or, holding a triple cross patte of the second between in chief two mullets of the third. The armoured hand stands for the military administration of the upper town, and the other civilian hand is for the mercantile lower town. The coat of arms was used more or less throughout in different artistic rendering, differing mainly in representation of the outer ornaments.
On 1 October 2002, the City Administration reportedly adopted a decision changing the coat of arms and the flag, but the details remained unknown. The intention was to make the coat of arms closer to the original 18th century artistic rendition. However, this was not published nor implemented, and the current design remains as is.
Various table flags are reported in use, some being equal to the official flag but hoited vertically, others being vertical triangularly ending flags with the coat of arms and the city name in an arch below, and yet others vertical blue flags with the previous design coat of arms the the base above two-lined city name. There may be others, as well.

Križevci, 1994 – 1997

The coat of arms design used previously included the same elements in a rectangular silver outline shield topped with a golden crown. It was stated that the crown indicated the historical status of the free royal city. The flag was blue-silver bicolour fimbriated with a white, with the coat of arms set in the centre, all the changes silver.

Križevci, 1991 – 1994

The same symbols as adopted in 1994 were initially adopted without the crown over the shield.

Križevci, 1965

A new coat of arms of Križevci was made in1 965 on the occasion of 20th anniversary of the liberation. It was made by prof. Stjepan Pomper. It depicts the old castle Kalnik topped with a red five-pointed star and in the base inscribed "7. maj" - the liberation day of Križevci. Details of design are unknown.
