The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |

Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia, Religious Communities
Various territories that formed the Kingdom of SHS in 1918 had different legal systems and thuse also different relations among church and state. The freedom of religion and conscience and equality of all religious denominations were guaranteed by the Art. 12 of the 1921 Constitution in principle. During the egsistence of teh South-Slavic state between the two World Wars, the relation among the religious communities and state represents a series of pursuits of different solutions. In the late 1929 the Law on the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Law on the Religious Community of Jews were passed, and in 1930 the Law on Muslim Religious Community as well as the Law on Evangelical Christian Churches and on the Reformed Christican Church, so these communities adopted their constititions. Solving of status of the Roman Catholic church was a hot unresolved issue in the state during its whole period of existence. Although finally, in 1935, the COncordate with teh Holy See was signed, and eventually ratified in the National Assembly in 1937, with much disatisfaction both from Serbian and Croatian sides, it was never adopted by the Senate and never passed into a law and became valid.
Some of the above-mentioned legislations determined flags of religious communities (some that had even longer tradition), and that still have important role in tehse communities even today.

The coat of arms and the flag of the Church were determined with its 1931 Constitution, and are basically the same as today. Graphical details of the design were not established past the blazon (description) in the Constitution. The same descriptions are retained in the 1947 Constitution, still valid today. The coat of arms is: A shield is centered upon a porphyry-colored Patriarchal Mantle which is adorned by a double-bar Patriarchal Cross on the right and an Episcopal Scepter on the left. The shield, which consists of a blue upper half and a white lower half, is adorned on the top by a Gold Episcopal Crown. The right side of the blue upper half of the shield contains a white portrayal of the Tower of Saint Sava in Chilandar. The left side of the blue upper half of the shield contains a white portrayal of the Monastery Church at the Patriarchate of Pech. The white lower half of the shield contains a Gold Cross of four equal sides with a Gold Fire-Irons in each corner of the Cross.
The flag is a tricolour of red, blue and white with a golden cross and fire-irons.
